Internet services in Las Vegas are available in three types – learn the differences here.

What is Optical Internet?
Optical Internet uses a flexible, transparent fiber made from high-quality glass (silica) or plastic, about the thickness of a human hair. It provides a dedicated, symmetrical Internet connection—meaning equal upload and download speeds—which is ideal for business use. For example, an optical Internet plan might offer guaranteed speeds of 500 Mbps for both uploading and downloading.

What is GPON Internet?
GPON Internet is a specialized broadband service offered by ISPs and serves as a more affordable fiber option for businesses. GPON stands for Gigabit Passive Optical Network and delivers a shared fiber connection with symmetrical speeds. Typically 50% cheaper than traditional Optical Internet, it offers a cost-effective high-speed alternative. ISPs usually deploy GPON using their existing legacy infrastructure and extend fiber speeds to users during the last stretch of the connection.

What is Wireless Internet?
The leading wireless Internet provider in Las Vegas is Cytranet, known for operating the city’s largest wireless network through a system of antennas placed at high elevations. Wireless Internet offers a dedicated, symmetrical connection. Data is transmitted via radio signals, which are received by a subscriber’s antenna and routed via cable to the user’s office. Weather conditions like hail or thunderstorms may disrupt the signal and cause delays. A key advantage of wireless Internet is its availability in remote locations like Mesquite and Boulder City.

What is Coax Internet?
Coax Internet is the most widely used form of high-speed Internet. Around 75% of Las Vegas businesses rely on it, receiving service through copper cables. It can deliver download speeds of up to 300 Mbps and upload speeds up to 30 Mbps. Unlike fiber, Coax is asymmetrical, meaning upload speeds are much lower than download speeds. Another drawback is that it’s a shared connection—your speeds can fluctuate based on how many people nearby are online.
