How one regional telecom provider is betting big on AI-driven network security.
When Doug Roberts picks up the phone, he sounds like a man who has not slept much lately, but not because anything is going wrong. Quite the opposite. The chief technology officer of Cytranet, a telecom and internet services provider that serves business, government, and enterprise clients, has spent the better part of the last year quietly rolling out a new approach to network security that leans heavily on artificial intelligence, and the results, he says, have been startling. It is the latest chapter in a broader push toward automation and trust that Roberts has been driving across the company’s network.
Roberts has been in the telecom industry for decades, and he is not the type to chase buzzwords. So when he starts talking about AI, it comes with a healthy dose of pragmatism.
“I have sat through more vendor pitches about AI than I can count,” Roberts said during a recent conversation. “Most of them are selling you a dashboard with a chatbot bolted on and calling it revolutionary. That is not what we are doing. What we have built is a system that actually watches traffic patterns across our network in real time and identifies threats before they become incidents. It is not theoretical. It is running right now, and it is catching things that our previous tools simply missed.”
The timing is not accidental. Across the telecom industry, providers are grappling with an unprecedented wave of cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure. Recent reports have highlighted sophisticated intrusions into major carrier networks, and government agencies have been sounding alarms about vulnerabilities in the systems that underpin everything from emergency services to financial transactions. For a company like Cytranet, which counts municipal governments and mid-size enterprises among its core customers, the stakes are enormous.
Roberts explained that the company began investing in AI-enhanced threat detection about eighteen months ago after a series of conversations with government clients who were increasingly worried about the security of their communications infrastructure.
“Our government customers were coming to us and saying, look, we are reading the same headlines everyone else is reading,” Roberts said. “They wanted to know what we were doing differently. And honestly, at that point, our answer was not good enough. We were doing the standard stuff — firewalls, intrusion detection, regular audits — but the threat landscape had moved way beyond that. We needed to evolve.”
What Cytranet built, according to Roberts, is a layered system that uses machine learning models trained on the company’s own network data to establish behavioral baselines for traffic flowing through its infrastructure. When something deviates from those baselines, the system flags it immediately and can take automated action to isolate the suspicious activity before it spreads.
“The key insight was that we have years and years of data about what normal looks like on our network,” Roberts said. “Every customer, every circuit, every application has a pattern. When you train a model on that data, it gets remarkably good at spotting anomalies. We had one case about three months ago where the system flagged a pattern of DNS queries from a government client’s network that looked completely benign on the surface. Turned out it was a slow exfiltration attempt. Our old tools never would have caught that.”
Roberts is quick to point out that the AI is not replacing human analysts. Cytranet has actually expanded its security operations team in parallel with the technology rollout.
“Anyone who tells you AI is going to replace your security team is selling you something,” he said with a laugh. “What it does is make your people dramatically more effective. Instead of sifting through thousands of alerts, most of which are false positives, our analysts are now working on a curated set of genuinely suspicious events. Their hit rate has gone through the roof. Morale is better too — honestly — because they are doing real investigative work instead of drowning in noise.”
The broader telecom industry is watching developments like these closely. As fiber buildouts continue to expand broadband access into new markets and as enterprises increasingly rely on managed network services, the providers that can demonstrate robust security capabilities are finding themselves with a significant competitive advantage. Roberts said Cytranet has seen a noticeable uptick in inbound inquiries from prospective customers who specifically cite security as a deciding factor.
“Five years ago, the sales conversation was almost entirely about bandwidth and price,” Roberts said. “Now security comes up in the first meeting, every single time. Government procurement officers want to see your security architecture before they even talk about service level agreements. That shift has been dramatic and, frankly, it is long overdue.”
Looking ahead, Roberts said the company is exploring how to extend its AI capabilities into network performance optimization, using similar modeling techniques to predict and prevent service disruptions before customers even notice them.
“The same principles apply,” he said. “You have data, you have patterns, and you can train a model to spot when something is about to go sideways. We are already piloting this on parts of our network, and early results are promising. The goal is to get to a point where we are fixing problems before the customer picks up the phone to call us. That is the standard we are holding ourselves to.”
For a regional provider competing against much larger national carriers, that kind of proactive approach may be exactly what sets companies like Cytranet apart, extending even into how the company thinks about where computing happens closest to the customer. Roberts seems to understand this intuitively.
“We are never going to be the biggest,” he said. “But we can absolutely be the smartest and the most responsive. That is the bet we are making, and so far, it is paying off.”
