When Doug Roberts picks up the phone, he sounds like a man who has not slept much lately, but not because anything is going wrong. Quite the opposite. The chief technology officer of Cytranet, a telecom and internet services provider serving business, government, and enterprise clients, has spent the better part of the last several months overseeing what he describes as the most significant infrastructure upgrade in the company’s history.
At the center of it all is a new approach to network security that leans heavily on artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect and neutralize threats in real time, a move that places Cytranet squarely in the middle of one of the hottest conversations in both the telecom and cybersecurity worlds.
Why Now
The timing is not accidental. Cyberattacks against critical infrastructure and government networks have surged over the past year, with state-sponsored threat groups increasingly targeting the types of regional service providers that form the connective tissue of American commerce and public services. Roberts says he watched those trends closely and decided Cytranet could not afford to wait.
I asked him what finally tipped the scales.
“We had been evaluating AI-based threat detection platforms for a while,” Roberts said. “But when we started seeing the sophistication of attacks increase, particularly against government and municipal clients, it became clear that traditional signature-based security was not going to cut it anymore. We needed something that could learn and adapt as fast as the threats were evolving.”
How the System Works
The system Cytranet has deployed uses machine learning models trained on massive datasets of network traffic patterns. Rather than relying on known threat signatures, it identifies anomalies in real time, flagging suspicious behavior before it escalates into a full-blown breach. Roberts says the platform has already proven its value in the few months since it went live.
“Within the first six weeks we caught lateral movement inside a client network that would have gone completely undetected by our previous systems,” he said. “It was not a false positive. It was an actual intrusion attempt, and the AI flagged it based on behavioral patterns that no human analyst would have noticed at that speed.”
Security as a Default, Not an Add-On
What makes Cytranet’s approach notable is not just the technology itself but how the company is integrating it across its full suite of services. Roberts explained that the AI security layer is being woven into everything from the company’s fiber and ethernet offerings to its managed services for enterprise and government clients. The goal, he said, is to make advanced threat protection a default rather than a premium add-on.
“There is a philosophical shift happening in telecom right now,” Roberts said. “For a long time, security was treated as a separate product, something you bolted on after the fact. We think that model is broken. Security has to be native to the network. It has to be baked into the infrastructure from the ground up, and AI gives us the tools to do that in a way that actually scales.”
The investment comes at a time when the broader telecom industry is grappling with how to modernize networks while managing costs and meeting growing regulatory requirements around data protection and critical infrastructure resilience. Fiber buildouts continue at a rapid pace across the country, and the push toward software-defined networking and edge computing is reshaping how providers think about their architectures.
The Regional Advantage
Roberts acknowledged that being a regional provider rather than a national carrier comes with both challenges and advantages in this environment.
“We do not have the R&D budgets of the tier-one carriers,” he said. “But we also do not have the bureaucracy. When we decide to move on something, we can execute quickly. Our government and enterprise clients appreciate that. They are not waiting eighteen months for a procurement cycle to finish. They need solutions now, and we can deliver on that timeline.”
He also pointed to the growing importance of partnerships in making this kind of deployment possible. Cytranet has been working with several AI and cybersecurity vendors to customize the platform for its specific client base, and Roberts said those relationships have been critical.
“No single company is going to solve this on their own,” he said. “The threat landscape is too complex and it moves too fast. What matters is how quickly you can integrate best-in-class tools into your environment and make them work for your specific customers. That is where we think we have an edge.”
What Comes Next
Looking ahead, Roberts said the company is already exploring how generative AI could be used to improve network operations more broadly, from predictive maintenance on physical infrastructure to automating routine configuration tasks that currently require manual intervention.
“We are just scratching the surface of what AI can do for network operators,” he said. “The security use case was the most urgent, so that is where we started. But the potential applications across operations, customer service, capacity planning, they are enormous. We are going to be a very different company in three years than we are today, and I mean that in the best possible way.”
For now, Roberts said the feedback from clients has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly from government agencies that face some of the most stringent compliance and security requirements.
“At the end of the day, our clients trust us with their most critical communications infrastructure,” he said. “That is not something we take lightly. Investing in AI-driven security is not just a technology decision. It is a commitment to the people and organizations that depend on us every single day.”
